Live Cover

Best practice would be to have a culture/cytology on an open mare, aged mare, or mare with a history of problems (ultrasound at the time to evaluate uterus and ovaries and any other need for pre-breeding diagnostics/treatments). Hormone management of the cycle to bring her into heat and ovulate at a controlled time. Ultrasounding before sending her to the stud, with the intention of timing ovulation and covering her one time. Ultrasound after breeding to confirm ovulation and clearance of seminal fluid. Another ultrasound at 16 days post ovulation for initial pregnancy evaluation.

Cooled Semen

Best practice is to have a culture/cytology on any open mare, aged mare, or mare with a history of problems. Ultrasound at the time to evaluate uterus and ovaries and any other need for pre-breeding diagnostics/treatments. Hormone management of cycle to bring her into heat and ovulate at a controlled time. Ultrasound 1 day before ordering semen (this is typically done on “collection day”) - semen is ordered for overnight delivery. Breed day 2. Ultrasound day 3 after breeding to confirm ovulation and clearance of seminal fluid. Ultrasound at 16 days post ovulation for initial pregnancy evaluation.

Frozen Semen

Best practice is to have a culture and cytology done. Semen is shipped to the clinic - no medications or other ultrasounds will be done until semen has been delivered to the clinic. Hormone management of the mare’s cycle to bring her into heat and ovulate at a controlled time. Mare is dropped off at the clinic the day before expected ovulation. Ultrasounds are repeated every 6 hours until ovulation is confirmed, and then she is bred. If two semen doses are available, this protocol may be modified following vet/owner discussion. Post breeding lavage 6 hours after breeding (more if necessary). Ultrasound at 16 days post ovulation for initial pregnancy evaluation.
