10. “Screwball Was A Racehorse” – Roger Miller version
This is a great old song from my youth. My Dad used to play Roger Miller records (kids, records are just like CD’s only bigger) and I used to sing along. We listened to such classics as “Screwball Was A Racehorse”, “King Of The Road”, and “Can’t Roller Skate In a Buffalo Herd”. For the memories alone “Screwball” makes the list.
9. “Blaze Of Glory” – Jon Bon Jovi
This song was written for anyone that loves the romantic side of the old west. What mythical cowboy didn’t want to “go out in a blaze of glory/starring down a bullet”. “I’m a colt in your stable/I’m what Cain was to Able/Mr. catch me if you can”. Even if it is not reality, these lyrics remind us of how we imagine the old west to have been. Besides, I love 80’s hair bands.
8. “Beer For My Horses” – Toby Keith and Willie Nelson
Legend has it that the great racehorse Zenyatta had Guinness Stout after each race. Let’s face it, everyone deserves a beer after a hard day’s work especially our horses. Toby Keith put that sentiment to music.
7. “Billy The Kid” – Billy Dean
I know this is not really a song about horses, but it takes me back to my youth. The duel meaning of Billy the western legend and Billy the singer as a kid speaks to me. Billy the singer misses his youth and so do I. Billy the western legend rode horses as a youth and so did I. Somewhere in there is a horsey song.
6. “Rawhide” – The Blues Brothers version
Who can forget John Belushi cracking that whip? If the lyrics “Move’em on, head’em up/Head’em up, move’em on/Move’em on, head’em up/Rawhide”, don’t make you want to go on a cattle drive then you are a little too civilized.
5. “Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy” – Big and Rich
This song is probably the song about horses that is the most fun to listen too. It has a great beat and the country rap lyrics are just fun to sing. You have to love a guy that would not trade his old stud Leroy for a Cadillac. This song deserves to be higher on the list, but since I am not really a cowboy “Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy” never helped me much with the ladies. Enough said.
4. “Rodeo” – Garth Brooks
In my opinion "Rodeo" is one of the first really cool country songs with a classic rock influence. It made me start to think differently about country music. "It's the broncs and the blood/It;s thhe steers and the mud/And they call the thing rodeo", it makes me want to rodeo. Maybe not, I would probably die.
3. “Wanted Dead Or Alive” – Bon Jovi
“I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride/I’m wanted (wanted) dead or alive”, this is a song about the modern cowboy. Even if we can’t all ride a horse to work, we can have a little of the cowboy spirit. Plus this is the quintessential hair band and I already told you that I love 80’s hair bands.
2. “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” – Toby Keith
Everybody has had a frustrating day and thought; I should Have been a cowboy! Who wouldn’t rather be “wearing my six-shooter riding my pony on a cattle drive” then toiling at work. When your boss is yelling at you; “Go west young man, haven’t you been told/California’s full of whiskey, women and gold”. I know I “should’ve been a cowboy/you should’ve been one too”.
1. “Run For The Roses” – Dan Fogelberg version
This song is about the ultimate competition and giving all you have to win that competition. If I am alone when I hear this song I usually cry. There is just something about dedicating your entire soul to a goal that makes me emotional. “And it’s run for the roses as fast as you can/Your fate is delivered your moments at hand/It’s the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance/And it’s high time you joined in the dance”. Lyrics like this make me want go out and achieve something.
